ARISTOTLE’S KING

Bald Mountain Theater unveils Aristotle’s King, an intimate, new play about the clash between genius and unbridled power

“You realize,” says the student to his teacher, “I could have you killed.”

In the crackling new drama by Dana Yeaton and Colston Merrell, the teacher is Aristotle and the student is none other than Prince Alexander, the not-yet Great.

Audiences can get their first glimpse of this new play, Aristotle’s King, on January 30 at Spice Studio in Rochester, Vermont. This bold reimagining of history’s most volatile and mysterious student-teacher relationship stars NYC-based actor Madison Middleton as Alexander, and Bald Mountain Theater’s artistic director Ethan Bowen as Aristotle.

Playwright Dana Yeaton is the author of several award-winning plays, including Mad River Rising, Midwives, The Big Random, and the musical My Ohio, all of which premiered at Vermont Stage Company and went on to have national productions. He is the founder of Vermont Young Playwrights and teaches playwriting at Middlebury College.

That’s where he met his co-writer, and former student, Colston Merrell. “Cole’s work electrified the theater department,” says Yeaton, who teamed up with the young writer, in part, to ensure a full-throated expression of Alexander’s perspective.

Bald Mountain Theater is renowned for story-based theater you won’t find anywhere else, bringing vivid life to short stories, folktales, and novellas. Their annual events include Krampusnacht, There Once Was…, Full Frontal Fairy Tales, and innovative new scripts like Aristotle’s King, which reflect the company’s dedication to actor-driven, collaborative theater-making.
