About Us
Bald Mountain is a story based theater nestled in the green mountains of central Vermont. We use fairy tales, folk tales, short stories and novellas in their rawest form to spark curiosity and creativity in our dynamic productions. Fairy tales teach us about the cultures that produce them as well as ourselves.
Our History

Bald Mountain’s premiere production, The Big Random, written by acclaimed Vermont playwright Dana Yeaton, follows a troubled man on his path to redemption. Professionally designed and beautifully performed, The Big Random filled houses in both Rochester and the Middlebury Town Hall Theater.
In 2004, the hilariously witty Stones in His Pockets toured to Rochester, Vergennes and Woodstock, regaling audiences with brash Irish humor and the timeless hold our homes have on all of us.
Piano Stories was the precursor to the type of work Bald Mountain hopes to do in the future, seeking to make classic stories accessible to audiences through the power of music. Pairing Chekov with Tchaikovsky, Fitzgerald with Gershwin, and Du Maurier with Schumann left spectators newly engaged and hungry for more.
2015 saw the introduction of our two Summer series, “Stories With Sound” featuring RAIN by Somerset Maugham, and “There Once Was …” with a variety of stories from Russia, Sweden and Germany.
2016 saw a spring tour of Hansel and Gretel to nine Vermont towns and a tour of Puss in Boots to 13 towns introduced our touring program.
The winter and spring 2018 saw us touring a solo show, Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong, a story by Tim O’Brien set in the Vietnam War; implementing our first creative youth theater intensive, giving students tools stage their own versions of folk tales and hone skills through storytelling, analysis, and directing; and developing our latest large-cast touring production, Viking Tales. This year, we also continued our signature summer series and end the year with our first winter solstice show, developed around the season’s themes of darkness and light.
Artistic Director Ethan Bowen brings a contemporary aesthetic to classic stories and aims to foster creativity, community, and engagement in Vermont communities through the power of storytelling. With a storied past and a bright future, Bald Mountain will soon be reaching out to audiences all over New England and leaving them behind engaged and transformed.
